About

Racing in United States

From the Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America and the TCS New York City Marathon — the world's oldest and largest marathons — to the flat, fast Bank of America Chicago Marathon , the United States hosts three of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors. Beyond the big-city majors, the calendar runs deep: desert ultras across the Southwest, coastal triathlons on both shores, and the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Whatever your distance — a neighborhood 5K, a first half marathon, or a 140.6-mile Ironman — there's almost always an event within driving distance, most weekends of the year.

Every distance

5K and 10K lead the calendar, with half marathons, marathons, trail ultras, cycling, open-water swimming and triathlon close behind.

When to race

Spring (Mar–May) and fall (Sep–Nov) are peak season. The Sun Belt — Florida, Texas, Arizona and SoCal — stays busy all winter.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about finding and registering for races in United States.

Browse all events →
What types of races can I find in the United States?
Running from neighborhood 5Ks up to Abbott World Marathon Majors like Boston, Chicago and New York; road and gravel cycling; open-water swimming; and triathlon from sprint distance to the full Ironman, including qualifiers for the Ironman World Championship in Kona — across all 50 states.
When is race season in the United States?
Events run all year, but the calendar is busiest in spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). Warm-weather states such as Florida, Texas and Arizona host large fields through the winter.
Which U.S. cities have the most races?
Major metro areas and running hubs typically list the most events. Check the “Top cities for races” section above to see where the calendar is busiest right now.
What's the largest marathon in the United States?
The TCS New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the U.S. and the largest in the world, with around 59.000 finishers in 2025. It runs through all five boroughs on the first Sunday in November and is organized by New York Road Runners.
What are the major marathons in the United States?
The U.S. hosts three of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors: the Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America (the world's oldest annual marathon, held every April), the Bank of America Chicago Marathon (a flat, fast October course known for world records), and the TCS New York City Marathon in November. Other large races include the Marine Corps Marathon, the Los Angeles Marathon, and the Chevron Houston Marathon.
How much do race entries typically cost?
Entry fees vary by distance and event size. Local 5Ks usually run about $25–$45 and 10Ks around $30–$50, while half marathons fall roughly between $45 and $120. Standalone marathons are commonly $80–$150, but big-city World Marathon Majors like Chicago and New York run $250 or more. Full-distance triathlons and Ironman events are the priciest, typically several hundred dollars and up.
When is the cheapest time to register for a race?
The earliest. Most U.S. races use tiered pricing, so the lowest fee is at registration opening or during the early-bird window, and the price steps up as the race nears race-day or late registration is usually the most expensive. Signing up early also locks in spots for events that sell out.
Do I need to qualify to run a marathon?
For the vast majority of U.S. marathons, no, so anyone can register until the race fills. The main exception is the Boston Marathon, which requires a qualifying time based on age and gender, and the other Majors, which fill many spots through a lottery, charity entry, or time qualification.
How far in advance do races open or sell out?
It varies widely. Large big-city marathons often open registration nearly a year ahead and can sell out or run a lottery months in advance, while local 5Ks, 10Ks and trail races frequently accept entries up to race week — sometimes even on race day.
Are past race results available?
Where available, past editions include finisher counts and results, so you can gauge field sizes and typical finish times before you sign up.
