About this race
Misty’s Legacy 100 Mile Challenge
Celebrating 100 Years of the Chincoteague Pony Swim & the Saving of Beebe Ranch
Step into history and ride for a cause with the Misty’s Legacy 100 Mile Challenge — a virtual riding challenge event inspired by the timeless story of Misty of Chincoteague, written 78 years ago by Marguerite Henry. The book may have introduced Misty to the world, but the real story began long before. The swim not only helps control the population of the ponies on the island and prevent starvation, it also historically has helped to be a fund raiser for the fire department.
In 1925, the Chincoteague Island Pony Swim became a formal community event, complete with a carnival, bringing families and horse lovers together from across the nation. This year marks the 100th anniversary of that cherished tradition — a century of saltwater swims, splashing ponies, and island spirit.
🐴 A Legacy Preserved
In 2024, with support from participants like you, WARHORSE Endurance Challenges proudly donated over $1,100 to help save the historic Beebe Ranch — the birthplace of Misty and home to her descendants. The ranch has now been secured by the Museum of Chincoteague Island, and this challenge is your chance to honor that beautiful victory and continue Misty’s legacy.
