01 Who we are
Race Discovery (“Race Discovery,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website at racediscovery.com (the “Service”), an endurance-event discovery platform that helps you find running, cycling, swimming, triathlon, and other races, and track your progress.
The entity responsible for your personal information (the “data controller” under applicable law) is Race Discovery, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. You can reach us about privacy at hello@racediscovery.com.
This policy applies to information we collect through the Service. It does not cover the practices of third parties we don’t control, including the race organizers and registration platforms you may be directed to (see section 7).
02 Information we collect
We collect information in three ways: information you give us, information we collect automatically, and information we receive from third parties.
Information you provide
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account details | First name, last name, email address, and the password you set when registering. |
| Profile & activity data | Races you save, follow, or register interest in; miles or activities you log; and progress you choose to track in your account. |
| Communications | Messages you send us for support, feedback, or other inquiries, and your contact preferences. |
| Marketing preferences | Whether you have opted in to newsletters or event updates. |
Information collected automatically
When you use the Service, we and our service providers automatically collect:
- Device & technical data — IP address, browser type, operating system, device identifiers, and language settings.
- Usage data — pages and events you view, searches and filters you apply, links you click (including outbound registration links), referring pages, and timestamps.
- Approximate location — a general location derived from your IP address, used to show races near you. We do not collect precise GPS location unless you explicitly grant permission.
- Cookies & similar technologies — see section 5.
Information from third parties
If you choose to sign up or sign in with Google, we receive basic profile information from Google such as your name and email address, in accordance with the permissions you grant and Google’s own privacy policy. We use this only to create and secure your account.
We do not intentionally collect special-category (sensitive) personal data, and we ask that you not submit it through the Service.
03 How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- Create, authenticate, and maintain your account, including “remember me” sessions and password resets.
- Provide core features — searching for events, saving races, and logging and tracking your progress.
- Personalize content, such as surfacing events near your approximate location.
- Respond to your support requests and communicate with you about the Service.
- Send service messages and, where permitted, newsletters or event updates you can opt out of at any time.
- Measure and improve the Service through analytics, troubleshooting, and research.
- Maintain security, prevent fraud and abuse, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
04 Legal bases for processing (EEA & UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR / UK GDPR:
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Providing your account and the core Service | Performance of a contract with you. |
| Analytics, security, fraud prevention, and improving the Service | Our legitimate interests, balanced against your rights. |
| Non-essential cookies and marketing emails | Your consent (which you may withdraw at any time). |
| Meeting legal and regulatory obligations | Compliance with a legal obligation. |
07 Third-party sites & race registration
The Service links to external websites, including event organizers and registration providers, so you can sign up for races “in one click.” Once you leave racediscovery.com, this Privacy Policy no longer applies. Those sites collect and handle your information under their own terms, and we are not responsible for their practices. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site before providing personal information.
08 Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. After that, we retain information only as long as necessary to meet the purposes described in this policy — for example, to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and enforce our agreements. When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymize it. You can ask us to delete your account at any time (see section 11).
09 Data security
We use technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), hashed password storage, access controls, and monitoring. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please use a strong, unique password and keep your credentials confidential. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.
10 International data transfers
Race Discovery serves users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, and elsewhere. Your information may be processed in countries other than where you live, including the United States of America and Canada, which may have different data protection laws. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. You may contact us for more information about these safeguards.
11 Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the rights below. To exercise them, contact us at hello@racediscovery.com. We will respond within the time required by applicable law and may need to verify your identity first. You will not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.
EEA & UK (GDPR / UK GDPR)
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data; restrict or object to processing; request portability; and withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (in the UK, the ICO).
California (CCPA / CPRA)
You may request to know, access, correct, and delete personal information; and to opt out of any “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and of certain targeted advertising. We do not knowingly sell the personal information of consumers.
Canada (PIPEDA)
You may access and correct your personal information and withdraw consent, subject to legal and contractual limits. You may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada with concerns.
Australia & other regions
You may request access to and correction of your personal information and raise privacy concerns with the relevant regulator (in Australia, the OAIC). We honor the rights granted by applicable local law.
You can also update most account information directly in your profile, and unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in any such message.
12 Children’s privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
13 Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal. Because there is no common industry standard for DNT, the Service does not currently respond to DNT signals. Where required by law, we honor recognized opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control (GPC).
14 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you by email or through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
