About this race
Join us and bring your friends, family, and pup for a 5K Run or One Mile Walk in the beautiful town of Freeport, Maine! Maine's first dog-friendly 5K is organized by Midcoast Humane, and all proceeds from the event go towards fulfilling our mission of making life better for animals and people in our community. By participating in this event you, are helping to provide life-saving veterinary care, food, and comfort to the 4,000 animals that come through our doors each year. Thank you.

Save a Stray 5K
Join us and bring your friends, family, and pup for a run for their lives on a beautiful August day in Maine! WHERE The Save a Stray 5K is a timed event starting at the Mast Landing School, 20 Mollymauk Ln, in Freeport. WHEN Saturday, August 16, 2025. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Mast Landing School, 20 Mollymauk Ln, in Freeport. The race begins at 8:00 a.m. REGISTRATION Online Registration will be available until 7:00pm on Friday, August 15th. Starting at 6:30am on August 15th, we will also be registering participants near the starting line at the Mast Landing School, 20 Mollymauk Ln, in Freeport. Please note that the price of day-of registration increases from $35 to $40. THE ROUTE The 5k route begins and ends at the Mast Landing School in Freeport, and the exact route can be seen on our website (saveastray.midcoasthumane.org). PRIZES Gift cards will be awarded to the top male and female finisher in each age group. The age groups will be: -10 years old and Under -40 to 49 years old -11 to 19 years old -50 to 59 years old -20 to 29 years old -60 to 69 years old -30 to 39 years old -70+ years old The top overall male and female finishers will receive extra special prizes! PACKET PICK UP You can pick up your runner packet on the day of the race (Saturday, August 16) starting at 6:30 a.m. at the Mast Landing School, 20 Mollymauk Ln, in Freeport. T-SHIRT PICK UP T-shirts can be picked up at check-in on Saturday, August 15 from 6:30am - 8:00am. Commemorative T-Shirts will be provided to anyone who registers by Sunday, July 26th. After that time, we cannot guarantee availability. TIMING We ask that all participants who do not have a time goal to please start the race towards the middle/rear of the pack. Dogs are welcome to run, walk, or hitch a ride in a stroller along next to you! RESULTS Results will be posted at the event and listed on the Save a Stray webpage the day of the race.
Save a Stray 5K & Walk - Virtual
Register as a Virtual Participant if you want to support the event but know you won't be available to attend in person. Commemorative T-Shirts will be provided to anyone who registers by Sunday, July 26th. After that time, we cannot guarantee availability.

Save a Stray Walk
Walk the mile to show support for shelter animals! The walk is a more leisurely physical endeavor than the 5K run, and is perfect to do with friends if you'd like to chat, and of course, walk with your dogs. WHERE The Save a Stray One-Mile Walk kicks off at Morse Elementary School, 21 Morse St in downtown Freeport (just behind L.L.Bean). You can find the exact route on our website (saveastray.midcoasthumane.org). WHEN Saturday, August, 15, 2026. Check-in begins at 7:00 a.m. at L.L. Bean's Discovery Park, 18 Morse St in downtown Freeport. The One-Mile Walk begins from that location at 8:00 a.m. REGISTRATION Online Registration will be available until 7:00pm on Friday, August 15th. We will be processing in-person walk registration at L.L. Bean's Flagship Store on August 15th from 5-7pm. You may register the day of the event at our registration table at Morse Elementary School, 21 Morse St in downtown Freeport beginning at 7:00 a.m. Registration the day of the event is $35 per person. T-SHIRT PICK UP T-shirts can be picked up at check-in on Saturday, August 15 from 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. Commemorative T-Shirts will be provided to anyone who registers by Sunday, July 26th. After that time, we cannot guarantee availability.
