About this race
On Sunday, September 13, the Shaker Lakes Parklands will be filled with the energy and enthusiasm of runners, hikers and community members of all ages when the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes hosts its annual and always-popular Hike & Run event. We invite you to join the festivities! The price will increase on race day so sign up early! Well-behaved leashed dogs are allowed on hikes and runs if they stay near the back.
What is the Hike & Run?
Run: 5k or 10k road race with chip timing and awards on a beautiful course around Shaker Lakes. The 1 Mile Run/Walk will be chip-timed and use the streets the of the 5k/10k course
Hike: Guided hikes in distances from 1 mile to 6 miles to explore our city and parks.
Hike & Run Day Timeline
- 7:00 AM - Packet Pick Up and Registration Open
- 8:30 AM - 5k and 10k start
- 8:35 AM - 1 Mile Start
- 8:45 AM - Hikes begin
- 10:00 AM - Awards and prizes
Awards
$100 cash awards to the Top Overall Male and Female in the 5k and 10k. Cookie Medals to the Top 3 male and female in each age group in the 5k and 10k, and top 3 overall male and female in the 1-Mile.
100% of donations go to the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes! Thank you for supporting us and we look forward to seeing you on event day.
Fundraising Incentives
Setup is simple and easy: create your personal fundraising page during registration, then share with friends, family, and across social media to start raising funds that will support the Nature Center's mission!
- Raise $100 and we will refund your entry fee.
- Raise $250 and earn a Nature Center at Shaker Lakes hat or water bottle and refunded entry fee.
- Raise $500 and earn a Hike & Run sweatshirt, a hat or water bottle and refunded entry fee.
- Raise $1,000 and earn a pair of tickets to the annual Nature Center Benefit (Nature at Night), a Hike & Run sweatshirt, a hat or water bottle and refunded entry fee.
Incentives earned for any fundraising levels after Wednesday, September 9 will be available after the race, by October 1. Participants will be contacted to arrange pick up.

Trail running
1-2 Mile Family Friendly Hike
Led by Nature Center at Shaker Lakes (NCSL). Register for a casual stroll along the Nature Center’s Stearn's Trail and Southerly Park to take in all the beauty and showcase the outdoor features of NCSL. For this special hike, leashed pets are welcome on Nature Center trails! Approximate time: 45 minutes, includes some accessible areas, but dirt trails and stairs are to be expected. Children under 2 are free. Children 3 to 12 years old are $20. Easy difficulty.
4 Mile Rim of the Gorge Hike
Led by Cleveland Hiking Club. Explore some of the lesser known trails in the area on this moderate hike around the rim of the Doan Brook Gorge. Look down and enjoy sweeping views of the gorge. A bit of history retained in some of the remains of past uses will be noted. Approximate time: 2-2.5 hours, varied terrain. Children under 2 are free. Children 3 to 12 years old are $20. Moderate difficulty.
5-6 Mile Gorge Hike
Led by NCSL. Challenge yourself with this difficult hike, which spans Doan Brook between the Nature Center and the Graffiti Dam just north and west of MLK Blvd. After going around Lower Lake and crossing Coventry Rd, we will follow the trails closest to Doan Brook, passing many historical points along the way. Hikers will climb small hills, negotiate tree roots, loose rocks, and low-hanging branches, so good hiking boots, hiking poles, and above all, good balance are recommended! Explore a beautiful trail, where you can hardly believe that heavily traveled roads are only a few dozen feet away. Approximate time: 2 1/2 – 3 hours, varied terrain. Children under 2 are free. Children 3 to 12 years old are $20. Strenuous difficulty.
2-3 Mile Botany Hike
Interpret the nature around the Shaker Parklands on this leisurely hike with botanist Joe king. Take in the picturesque sights while learning about different native plants and how they thrive in the environment around us. Approximate time: 1-2 hours, includes some accessible areas, but dirt trails and stairs are to be expected. Children under 2 are free. Children 3 to 12 years old are $20. Moderate difficulty.
