Timing
At race #1 all runners need to wear a South Berkeley 5K numbered bib.
For races 2-8 runners competing in the full Winter Series will wear their assigned shoe timing chip. Runners will wear the same shoe chip at each race. Lost shoe chips can be replaced for $20 per chip. At the end of the series we ask that the shoe chips be returned so we can clean them up and use them again next year.
Runners competing in single races will be provided a numbered bib on race day.
Volunteers Needed!
SVR is a non-profit running club and the Winter Series is managed 100% by volunteers. Please consider volunteering to help. Volunteers are needed before, during and after each race. Many volunteer slots do not overlap with the race so it is possible to volunteer and compete. Click on the "volunteer" tab on the left side of the screen to sign up.
Series Points & Awards
Participants must be registered for the full Winter Series and have a 2026 club membership established before February 1, 2026 to be eligible for a Winter Series award.
http://svrunners.org/join-svr/
There will be no awards presented at any race (other than race #1). This is a series event, with points given after each race, and accumulated through the series.
After each race, runners are given points based on their overall finish and their age group finish (ranked against other runners of the same listed gender). In most cases, runners will have unique scores in each category. Runners can receive up to 500 points for each race in each category. The first place runner receives 500 points, second place receives 499 points, third place 498, etc. A runner's cumulative score will reflect their top 6 finishes in the series thus the maximum score any runner can achieve in each category at the end of the series is 3000. Runners must complete at least 5 races to be eligible for awards though the required number of races may decrease with cancellations.
If it is necessary to cancel one race (see inclement weather statement below), and it can not be rescheduled, a runner's cumulative score will reflect their top 6 out of 7 finishes with a maximum series score of 3000. Runners must complete at least 5 races to be eligible for an award.
If it is necessary to cancel two races, and they can not be rescheduled, a runner's cumulative score will reflect their top 5 out of 6 finishes with a maximum series score of 2500. Runners must complete at least 4 races to be eligible for an award.
Awards will be given in the following categories.
- Top five males & females overall
- Top three males & females in the following age groups: 10 & under, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 & over
*Age groups are calculated based on the runners age on December 31, 2025
**SVR reserves the right to combine age groups if there are insufficient runners in an age group to make it competitive
***There will be no duplication of overall and age group awards.
****Ties in age group points will be recognized. There will be no tie-breaker events.
A Perfect Attendance award will be presented to each SVR Member who attends all scheduled events.
Awards will be presented at the SVR Banquet on April 11, 2026 at the Millwood Station Banquet Hall, 252 Costello Dr, Winchester, VA 22602.
At the SVR Banquet the club's Board of Directors will also present the following awards
- Ray Gordon Spirit of Running Award: The award is given to the person/persons/organization that best promote the spirit of running for the year.
- Volunteer of the Year: Given to the person or persons who volunteer at a number of local and club events.
- Runners of the Year: Given to SVR member for club participation and/or outstanding performance within their age group.
Inclement Weather
This is the Winter Series and we will run in the cold, sleet, and (maybe) snow.
YOU ARE THE BEST JUDGE OF WHETHER OR NOT IT IS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO/FROM AND RUN IN AN EVENT
If the Race Director concludes that an event must be canceled all efforts will be made to quickly communicate the change in status. The SVR page on Facebook and email blasts will be the best source of current information.
If an event is cancelled we will try to reschedule to the following weekend. Rescheduling is dependent upon many variables including staffing availability, venue availability, and our ability to secure any required event permits.

Friends and family are welcome to join the brunch and can purchase a full-price ticket directly from West Oaks. https://pci.jotform.com/form/252805536241151 The team at West Oaks has mapped out a race course that gives us a cross-country tour of the farm. SVR Winter Series #4 - 60 Minutes at MSV
How far can you go in 60 minutes? We’ve mapped out a 1-mile loop on the trails at MSV. You have 60 minutes to complete as many laps as possible. Only completed laps will count. For Winter Series scoring the runner who does the most laps is the winner. If there is a tie in laps, the runner who completed the most laps, in the least amount of time, is the winner. This is a loop course that travels on paved streets and compacted gravel pedestrian walkways. We will have course marshals at major intersections but streets will remain open to vehicular traffic. Results for this race will be recorded using both a clock-time start and a clock-time finish. Timing chips will be used to provide lap splits. A course map and elevation profile can be viewed at the following links. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/327293083 The Trails at MSV are one of the best place to run in Winchester. SVR Winter Series #5 - Gambler 5K @ Third Winchester Battlefield **CANCELED**
The Winter Series is scored on your 6 best finishes in the 8 race series. At this point in the series you are probably recognizing your competition and thinking about how the final series scoring might look. With this race we will try and shake up the series results a bit. The main racecourse will be a 5K on the dirt and gravel trails through the battlefield. During the race runners will encounter three opportunities to take a detour. Each detour will add approximately 0.15 mile to the overall race distance but will provide runners the opportunity to collect a raffle ticket from a course marshal on the detour. At the end of the race SVR will raffle off several prizes including a gift certificate for a new pair of shoes from Runners’ Retreat. Will you take the fast route and stay on course to protect your overall Winter Series score or will you gamble by taking a detour to get a raffle ticket and risk getting passed by the competition? Results for this race will be recorded using both a chip-time start and a chip-time finish. A course map and elevation profile of the main 5K route (detours not shown) is available at the following links: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/207588256 https://www.strava.com/routes/3161821074290211544 Parking is available in the main student lot at Millbrook High School. 251 First Woods Dr Winchester, VA 22603 Tag your photos with #SVRuns The Third Winchester Battlefield Park is composed of more than 600 acres of preserved land. The Third Battle of Winchester, fought on September 19, 1864, was the largest and costliest battle ever fought in the Shenandoah Valley. More than 54,000 men fought and over 8,600 became casualties in a ferocious see-saw struggle that saw the Confederates gradually forced back until a final decisive attack by Federal infantry and cavalry struck the Confederate left flank, breaching the defenders’ lines, and sending the Confederates “whirling through Winchester”. Special thanks to Race Director Mathew James for organizing and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation for preserving this land and hosting the race.
SVR Winter Series #6 - Heart & Soles 5K @ Middletown
Virginia is for lovers and this race is on Valentine's Day. Run a 5K around Middletown to get your heart racing and give some soles to two local charities. Our goal is to collect 100 pairs of new shoes and 100 pairs of used shoes! We are collecting new shoe donations for local children supported by Froggy's Closet. Athletic style shoes preferred (all toddler sizes and big kid/adult sizes 8 and under). Add a pair now to your online shopping cart or note it on your shopping list for your next trip to the store. Every child deserves to have good shoes. We also want your used running shoes which we will use to raise money for Blue Ridge Hospice through Runners' Retreat and the Sneakers4Good program. To be accepted, shoes should be clean, dry, and wearable. Right now, their greatest need is toiletries—items like shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and hygiene products that are not covered by most assistance programs. If you are able, please consider bringing a donation and helping support students and families in our local community. Your generosity makes a real difference. Results for this race will be recorded using both a chip-time start and a chip-time finish. Tag your photos with #SVRuns There will be plenty of parking near the start line on Ram Drive.
