The Hare and Tortoise 8K/5K Run Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run
The 17th Annual Karene O’Hare/Bitsy Whitten Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2025 on the Capital Trail in partnership with the Williamsburg Community Foundation; a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt non-profit organization tax, identification number 54-1927558. This Memorial Run is the only annual fundraising program that supports Ovarian Cancer screening, treatment and education for uninsured and under-insured women in the greater Williamsburg community.
The O’Hare/Whitten families sponsor this Run to raise money to combat Ovarian Cancer in memory of Karene O’Hare and Bitsy Whitten who were victims of the disease. Since 2009, over $277,000 has been distributed to help underwrite the Ovarian Cancer programs offered by the Lackey Clinic and the Olde Towne Medical & Dental Center to their patients.
In November 2016, we established an Ovarian Cancer Endowment Fund at the Williamsburg Community Foundation as a permanent source of income for this cause. The Fund provides donation sustainability to build and strengthen the significant Ovarian Cancer health care that Lackey and Olde Towne provide for our community. The money raised by the annual Run is deposited into the Endowment Fund and invested. As of January 2024, the value of the Endowment Fund has grown to over $377,000
We encourage you to support this fundraiser and sign up to run or walk the event in person on September 13, 2025. The 8K race/8K competitive walk will start from The Meadows at 8:30 AM on a course along Capital Trail, followed closely by the 5K run/walk at 8:40 AM. These races will be preceded by a one-mile fun run at 8:00 AM. Courses are USATF certified. All runners and walkers receive a swag bag, custom race shirt ( T-shirt and T-Shirt size guaranteed if registered by 9/7/25. After the race enjoy music, food, and complimentary beer (must be 21 or older to receive).

5K Top five male and female overall in the 5K run.
8K Top three male and female overall in 8K Run and Top three male and female in age groups 19 and under, then 5 yr age groups from 20-24 through 75 and over.
8K Competitive Walk Top three male and female overall.
Race Day packet Pick up and After Race party is in the Meadows opposite the Jamestown Settlement Parking Lot.
Virtual participants can run or walk any 8K or 5K course at their convenience. Virtual rules are simple; register for the race and submit your results by September 13, 2025. A shipping fee of $9.00 for race shirts must be paid in advance.
Thank you for your support in the fight against this dreadful disease. We hope to make this a record year for race entrants and fundraising to honor the legacy of John O’Hare, founder of the Hare & Tortoise, who passed away in May of 2022.

Running
1-Mile Fun Run
The 1 mile Fun Run is an out and back run starting at the common start/finish line for the 8K and 5K. It is near the zero mile marker on Virginia Capital Trail. This is not a timed race and no awards are given to the participants. This event is designed to encourage our youth and older citizens to stay active and provide an opportunity for them to support our fight against Ovarian Cancer.
8K Run/Walk
This is an 8k Run/Walk and it is a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race, The run starts and finishes near the zero mile marker on the Virginia Capital Trail. Awards are given to the top three male and female overall finishers and to the top three male and female finishers in age groups 19 and under and five year increments from 20-24 thru 75 and over. All participants receive a custom printed wicking t-shirt ( must be registered by 11/2/26), entry into the post race party and for those 21 and over a complimentary beer.
8K Virtual Run/Walk
Sign up and run the race virtually. If you chose to run virtually, you can run any 8K course at your convenience. You cannot use another race. You must send us your finish time by 11/14/26 and we will send you a race T-Shirt. You will not be eligible for any race awards. By participating you will improve your aerobic conditioning and provide valuable support in the fight against Ovarian Cancer. For more information contact the Race Director.
5K Run/Walk
This is a 5K Run Walk event. You can run or walk or any combination of running and walking. Top five men and women overall win custom awards. This is not a CRR Grand Prix Event.
5K Virtual Run Walk
Sign up and run the race virtually. If you chose to run virtually, you can run any 8K course at your convenience. You cannot use another race. You must send us your finish time by 11/14/26 and we will send you a race T-Shirt. You will not be eligible for any race awards. Walking
8K Competitive Walk
This is a competitive walk and it is a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race. Participants must only walk this course. No running allowed. The top three men and women will will earn an award medal. All participants receive a custom printed wicking t-shirt ( must be registered by 11/2/26), entry into the post race party and for those 21 and over a complimentary beer.
