About this race
Welcome to winter! Grab your hat and gloves because it's time to run!
That’s right, registration is open for a full series of 8 in-person races. For those who participated in last year's Winter Series we expect that this year will be mostly familiar. Still, there are some important changes and details to take note of. We encourage you to thoroughly review the series description that follows and the descriptions of each individual event.
General Summary
Full Series Pricing:
- Individuals - $60
- Student (up to age 23) and seniors (65+) - $40
- Family (up to 4 family members) - $140
Single Race Pricing (not including Event #1):
- $20 per-person when completed through RunSignup
- $25 per-person for in-person registration on day of race (cash only)
Registration for the full Winter Series can only be completed through RunSignup and is only available to active club members. Winter Series participants must have a 2026 club membership established before February 1, 2026 to be eligible for a Winter Series award.
Please complete your membership enrollment/renewal before registering for the Winter Series.
Consider establishing a Lifetime Membership and securing your eligibility into future running of the Winter Series.

As a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) affiliated club we agree to follow their recommendation to not allow earphones, pets, or strollers in any of our races.

Swag is only guaranteed for the first 800 runners to check-in for the full Winter Series.
We are not offering t-shirts or other swag for individual races.

Timing
At race #1 all runners need to wear a South Berkeley 5K numbered bib.
For races 2-8 runners competing in the full Winter Series will wear their assigned shoe timing chip. Runners will wear the same shoe chip at each race. Lost shoe chips can be replaced for $20 per chip. At the end of the series we ask that the shoe chips be returned so we can clean them up and use them again next year.
Runners competing in single races will be provided a numbered bib on race day.

SVR is a non-profit running club and the Winter Series is managed 100% by volunteers. Please consider volunteering to help. Volunteers are needed before, during and after each race. Many volunteer slots do not overlap with the race so it is possible to volunteer and compete. Click on the "volunteer" tab on the left side of the screen to sign up.
Series Points & Awards
Participants must be registered for the full Winter Series and have a 2026 club membership established before February 1, 2026 to be eligible for a Winter Series award.

There will be no awards presented at any race (other than race #1). This is a series event, with points given after each race, and accumulated through the series.
After each race, runners are given points based on their overall finish and their age group finish (ranked against other runners of the same listed gender). In most cases, runners will have unique scores in each category. Runners can receive up to 500 points for each race in each category. The first place runner receives 500 points, second place receives 499 points, third place 498, etc. A runner's cumulative score will reflect their top 6 finishes in the series thus the maximum score any runner can achieve in each category at the end of the series is 3000. Runners must complete at least 5 races to be eligible for awards though the required number of races may decrease with cancellations.
If it is necessary to cancel one race (see inclement weather statement below), and it can not be rescheduled, a runner's cumulative score will reflect their top 6 out of 7 finishes with a maximum series score of 3000. Runners must complete at least 5 races to be eligible for an award.
If it is necessary to cancel two races, and they can not be rescheduled, a runner's cumulative score will reflect their top 5 out of 6 finishes with a maximum series score of 2500. Runners must complete at least 4 races to be eligible for an award.
Awards will be given in the following categories.
- Top five males & females overall
- Top three males & females in the following age groups: 10 & under, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 & over
*Age groups are calculated based on the runners age on December 31, 2025
**SVR reserves the right to combine age groups if there are insufficient runners in an age group to make it competitive
***There will be no duplication of overall and age group awards.
****Ties in age group points will be recognized. There will be no tie-breaker events.
A Perfect Attendance award will be presented to each SVR Member who attends all scheduled events.
Awards will be presented at the SVR Banquet on April 11, 2026 at the Millwood Station Banquet Hall, 252 Costello Dr, Winchester, VA 22602.
At the SVR Banquet the club's Board of Directors will also present the following awards
- Ray Gordon Spirit of Running Award: The award is given to the person/persons/organization that best promote the spirit of running for the year.
- Volunteer of the Year: Given to the person or persons who volunteer at a number of local and club events.
- Runners of the Year: Given to SVR member for club participation and/or outstanding performance within their age group.
Inclement Weather
This is the Winter Series and we will run in the cold, sleet, and (maybe) snow.
YOU ARE THE BEST JUDGE OF WHETHER OR NOT IT IS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO/FROM AND RUN IN AN EVENT
If the Race Director concludes that an event must be canceled all efforts will be made to quickly communicate the change in status. The SVR page on Facebook and email blasts will be the best source of current information.
If an event is cancelled we will try to reschedule to the following weekend. Rescheduling is dependent upon many variables including staffing availability, venue availability, and our ability to secure any required event permits.

SVR Winter Series #3- Pizza or Resolutions 5K @ Skyline High School
Fulfill your new year health and fitness resolutions by crushing a 5k. SVR is serving up hills for breakfast while Fox's Pizza Den in Front Royal will be serving pizza for desert. https://www.foxspizza.com/store/virginia/front-royal-va/ This is a loop course that travels on paved streets and mixed surface pedestrian walkways. We will have course marshals at major intersections but streets will remain open to vehicular traffic. SVR Winter Series #4 - Mystery Distance @ LRCC Middletown
For this event we're keeping the race distance a mystery. We will tell you at the finish line the actual distance but expect it to be between 2 and 5 miles. Will you leave the start line too fast, too slow or just right? This will be a closed course on the Laurel Ridge Community College campus in Middletown. Expect some parking lots to be closed during the race so arrive early enough to navigate parking and, possibly, a short walk to the start line. SVR Winter Series #5 - Stickman’s Tandem 5K @ Strasburg High School
Come run in the shadow of a legend and in a cornerstone event of the Winter Series. Organized by the current holder of the Virginia Tech record in the 10k, three time qualifier for the Olympic Trials, owner of Runners' Retreat and all-around awesome guy - Mark "Stickman" Stickley. 2023 will bring the 25th annual running of Stickman's Tandem 5k. Run this solo or as a tandem. If you choose the latter your finish place will be combined with your teammate to determine the winners! Lowest score wins (cross country scoring)! Tandem teams will compete in one of the following categories: Male, Female, Co-Ed or, Family (two immediate family members). The Stickman will be giving awards to the top tandem teams after the race. The tandem competition is a bonus to the Winter Series. There is no additional cost to compete as a tandem and registering in the tandem competition does not impact a runner's individual Winter Series scoring. SVR Winter Series #6 - Heart & Soles 5K @ Middletown
Virginia is for lovers and Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Come get your heart racing with a 5k through Middletown. Bring your best and worst running soles. Best to race in and worst to donate. SVR will be collecting used running shoes which will be used to raise funds for the Blue Ridge Hospice. This is a loop road course starting at the Middletown Town Hall and continuing on rolling country roads before finishing back at the Town Hall. Winter is almost over and Daylight Savings Time is about to start. This race will be at Millbrook High School. By now series attendance streaks have been formed and series scores have revealed your competitors. Who is going to get the bragging rights for the next year? SVR Winter Series #8 - Museum of the Shenandoah Valley 4 Miler
The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley has hosted many SVR races over the years. It's always been a fun place to run but with the opening of The Trails at MSV it's become one of the best place to run in Winchester. SVR, using money raised from your support of events like the Winter Series, is proud to have donated $10,000 toward the building of The Trails at MSV. SVR Winter Series #1 - South Berkeley Christmas 5K
Your registration into the full Winter Series includes registration for the South Berkeley Christmas 5K. Although this race is not directly organized by SVR we are thrilled to team up with the Race Directors and incorporate it again into the Winter Series. SVR will be at the event expo on both Saturday and Sunday to complete Winter Series registration and distribute swag items. This race starts at 2pm but arrive early to navigate road closures, parking, and registration. This 5K race starts before the South Berkeley Christmas Parade and all proceeds benefit The Berkeley County Humane Society. The course follows along the parade route so there will be plenty of cheering spectators. This course is flat and fast making it a good race to try and set a new PR! This is a Christmas 5K and the Race Directors encourage runners to dress for the occasion. Let's see those ugly sweaters, Santa suits and reindeer antlers! Since this race benefits the Berkeley County Humane Society the Race Directors also invite well behaved dogs to run the race! Pets are not allowed in Winter Series races 2 through 8 so take advantage of this unique opportunity! Because SVR is able to register Winter Series runners in the Berkeley 5K at a significantly reduced rate, a Berkeley 5K shirt is not included with your Winter Series registration. SVR Winter Series #2 - Jingle Bell 5K @ Blandy Experimental Farm
Join us for what is often the biggest race of the Winter Series. Come dressed in your finest holiday sweater. We will supply bells to tie on your shoes and you'll make them ring as you circle the grounds of the Virginia State Arboretum. This is a loop course on wide gravel roads with just enough rolling hills to make it exciting.
